String Splitter: How to Quickly Split Data by Delimiter

A string splitter is a tool that helps when you have data in one format and need the same data in another. For example, you have a list of records in the form mail:name:id, and you want mail|name|id. Or the other way around. The tool above is ready to use. Paste a list of lines, set up blocks based on the first line, choose the output delimiter, and the result appears instantly. All other lines are transformed exactly the same way as the first one.

1. What a String Delimiter Is

String splitter

A delimiter is a character or set of characters that separates one piece of data from another. The most common options are a colon, a pipe, a comma, a semicolon, or a double colon. When you choose a delimiter, each line is split into blocks. Each block is a separate value.

For example, the string mail:name:id with the delimiter ":" becomes three blocks: mail, name, id. After that, these blocks can be reordered in any way and rejoined with a different delimiter.

2. Where It Is Used in Practice

When working with tables, CSV files, database exports, logs, and configs, data is often stored as a string with delimiters. But different programs use different formats. For example, one system exports data as mail:name:id, while another expects mail|name|id. Instead of manually changing the characters, it is easier to split the string into blocks once and rejoin them in the desired order with the desired delimiter.

The tool handles a whole list of lines at once but uses the first line as a template. This is handy when you have hundreds or thousands of similar records that need to be converted from one format to another using one rule.

3. How to Use the Tool

Tool interface

1. Paste a list of lines into the "Input data" field. The first line sets the template: it defines the blocks and their count.

2. Choose the input delimiter: one of the presets (colon, double colon, pipe, double pipe, comma, semicolon) or type your own.

3. Blocks from the first line will appear below. Drag them with your mouse to change the order. A double-click on a block temporarily removes it from the result. A double-click on it brings it back.

4. Choose the output delimiter. All lines are rebuilt using the same template: same block order, same hidden fields.

5. Click "Copy result" and paste the data wherever you need it.

4. Useful Tips

The first line is the sample. If it has 4 blocks, all other lines will be split into 4 parts. If some line is shorter, its missing blocks stay empty. If a line is longer, extra parts are dropped.

If the delimiter contains characters like a backslash, remember that `\n` turns into a newline and `\t` into a tab. This is handy when you need to split data by lines or columns.

All operations are performed in your browser. Data is not sent to a server and is not saved. You can work even with sensitive information by disconnecting from the internet after the page loads.

Conclusion

A string splitter is a simple and fast replacement for manual editing. It saves time when you need to convert a large list from one format to another, change the order of fields, or remove unnecessary data. The tool above works directly in your browser, with no registration and no installation, supports multi-line lists, and fully preserves the privacy of your data.
